PARASITE FREE OYSTERS FOR EXPORT  

Our farmed oyster, the flat native oyster (Ostrea edulis), is considered to be of very high quality in Europe and thus fetch a high market value. In the rest of Europe and the USA, this oyster species has been hit hard by a deadly parasitic disease, which has drastically reduced the supply of flat oysters. The parasite, which is called Bonamia ostreae is found along the Atlantic coast from Spain to Denmark, and on both the west and east coasts of North America, but not in Sweden. Our oysters are thus one of the few Bonamia parasite free stocks in the world. We have received inquiries from European oyster farmers who want to buy healthy parasite-free oysters for release in their own farms. This should potentially be a future Swedish export industry if we succeed in keeping our waters free from the bonamia parasite.
