WHAT DRINK GOES WITH OYSTERS?

Oysters are associated with a little bit of luxury and glamor and Champagne, preferably a Blanc de Blanc is often served with fresh oysters. In France, Champagne is usually only served with oysters on New Year’s Eve. Sparkling, crisp or dry white wines also go well with oysters. Popular wines to serve with oysters are Sancerre and Muscadet Sur Lie from the Loire valley, and also Chablis. For grilled and baked oysters, a chilled lighter red wine also works well. Whatever wine you choose for the oysters, it should be served well chilled.

The Irish are big oyster producers and consumers and they often drink beer with oysters, preferably darker beers, such as porter or stout. Guinness beer and oysters are a perfect combination for those who prefer beer instead of wine. As luck would have it for us, there is an Oyster Stout made locally by a brewery in nearby Grebbestad. Not unexpectedly, whiskey and oysters are often served together in Scotland, Ireland and the United States. The salty taste of oysters goes especially well with Scotch whiskey.
